Hello Fons,

Thank you for reading this post and for commenting!

I realise that it would have been possible for me to use OS X and/or Windows to get the job done, and I also realise that the RIAA is more to blame for this usability problem than Apple is. However, my point is that technology should be an enabler and should not limit the user in how it is used. I am quite principled in this belief and open hardware is part of the way to achieving this goal.

Apple has a history of locking down their (mostly excellent) products, which is a real shame. Let me link to an example: http://ipodminusitunes.blogspot.com/2007/09/apple-cuts-us-off.html
Why is Apple trying to force us to use iTunes with their iPods?

What are your thoughts on open hardware? I would love to know!

Kind regards,

Hans

Hi Hans, Chiming in a little late, but I sort of stumbled upon your blog and this post.
You wrote:
>>I had to help somebody who’s Windows laptop had died. She bought a new Apple laptop and wanted to move her music from her iPod to her new laptop: impossible! It took Linux as an intermediary to get it done.<<
I'm in the business of defending Apple a bit in this sort of situations, so here I go: There are many (Mac and Win) tools out there that could do that quite easliy actualy. Senuti (http://fadingred.org/senuti/) for instance is a free, Mac based tools that should have done the trick. And here's another how to: http://www.macworld.com/article/54342/2006/12/twowaystreet20.html

I do agree that it's a bit cumbersome, but it's not all Apple fault. Media companies and artists want their stuff to be copyright protected. There's a good bit of explanation on that in the MacWorld article as well.
