Interesting I approached this problem the other way around, instead of using moodle as a content provider I used the phone to provide content to moodle:

Hi All,

We are about to publish MTouch, the first and only native IPhone application for Moodle. MTouch does not require server side changes and is directly usable by the students.

You can check details from http://www.moodletouch.com

Download the "Try before you buy" free Windows version from http://www.pragmasql.com/home/moodletouch/download-mtouch.aspx

Your Welcome Hans
Please, don't hesitate to write if you have any remark for the project moodle4iPhone. You have a lot of good ideas about designing a mobile application.
Kind regards

Don, thank you for attending! I am sure there were many other reason for attending the iMoot!

I am sorry to hear that you had more questions. Would you like to ask them in the session specific forum on the iMoot site. I would definitely put my thoughts there and maybe we can get other participants involved too.

Just a quick answer: Drupal seems to be ahead of Moodle in two ways:
1. The professionalism of its commercial outfit (see http://acquia.com). Moodle chose a different way of commercialising (de-centralised) that has worked very well too, but might have inhibited the amount of time that can be put in development.
2. Its technical architecture. I am not a programmer, but I know that Drupal has implemented an architecture that is incredibly flexible by design. It makes the learning curve slightly steeper, but it allows a deeper level of customisation and integration that people really seem to want.

Of course there is a space for being course centric. It is just that I believe that most students when they think of what they need to do or interact with don't think about a particular course, but would like a more holistic view. A mobile app could be an opportunity to explore that concept.

Thanks again,

Hans

Thanks for the iMoot presentation today. It was the must-see reason I joined the conference. Too bad it ended so quickly because I had lots of questions and more comments. First, Moodle as a platform. Is Drupal ahead of Moodle? Should we jump to that? Why or why not? Second, you said in this blog posting that Moodle is too course-centric. I think that is no problem as long as Moodle can have other sides to it--individualistic, PLE, social, etc. Everyone wants to lose weight, but why is it that many people don't lose weight until they join a group to do so. Vygotsky has a point! Universities are built upon graduation certificates and credits for courses. Moodle has a great role there.

I've been using Moodle for 2+ years in a support role and have often dreamed of something similar (Moodle lite?). I really like your idea of the activity stream, but to be honest, if Moodle is so hindered by it's own architecture why not start from scratch in building an app that truly focuses on the user experience (instead of the course construction)? (This question has often intrigued me.)

I wanted to share with what I've been working on (because your post resonated with me), it's not Moodle (we tried to get as far away from that as possible), but in terms of delivering a student/teacher activity stream I think it's spot on. Beta opens in 2010, but we'd really like feedback on the concept/essential parts: http://coursefeeds.com

Great post, a Mobile Moodle app, irregardless would be awesome for students.

Yes yes yes!

At Moodle HQ we have plans to develop an iPhone client as soon as Moodle 2.0 is released early next year (ie we're going to take a working holiday from Moodle code and focus completely on it for a couple of weeks at least).

Please keep thinking about these designs and fleshing them out, it will be really helpful!

Cheers,
Martin

Nice ideas! My two cents: since you don't need offline and the interface is not to complicated, this doesn't need to be a 'native' (store) iPhone app. Looks like a great web app to me. Web apps are easier to code, don't need Apple's approval and updates can be done instantaneously on the server.
