I recall a discussion in 2004 on the informaticavo site about a company that said it offered products based on open source. I complained about the fact that it suggests something, could I see the code? Answer: no. Why then "based on open source". Answer: well we use php and mysql. :-O

Hello Paul,

Thank you very much for your comment and question! It is very hard for me to check whether Roger has indeed used "open source" in his marketing for the last ten years. If I do a casual check of fronter.com on the <a href="http://www.archive.org/web/web.php" rel="nofollow">Internet Archive</a> I don't come up with anything though. If you want my personal opinion, then I think it is a mix of being truthful and playing dumb. I am sure he used the term before anybody thought it was a problem, but people have taken offence since early 2007 and two years later he hasn't changed a thing. It really is very fashionable to be open source these days and Roger is a good enough sales person to feel that and want to take advantage of it.

Cheers,

Hans

Hans - Did you check to see if it was true? Have they been using the term "open source" for the last decade? Is it possible that the open source organizations you mention were so small and unknown at the time they were founded and for many years afterwards that the CEO of Fronter (and myself who started in online learning in 1995) may have never heard or known about the movement? I don't use Fronter and have no reason to defend it but I do think you may have a bit of a red herring there.
